sell french property
As I write this in late spring of 2008 the exchange rate of the dollar and the pound against the euro seems a little - albeit at about 18% lower than it is at the beginning of the year. This, of course, has a massive impact on people in search of cheap real estate in France.
The good news is that real estate bargains exist. Perhaps you have a bit more work and a little bit harder, but if your dream is a house hold, in France it is still a dream to achieve.
As an expatriate living in France I regularly speak to people who are for the household property, usually as a holiday home, but also with a view to a permanent move. There are fewer of them to participate in this first part of the year, but they are all concerned about whether they will be able to find something. You are now about one-fifth less to spend than they thought they had at Christmas.
Just a quick aside here. The spring is actually a good time to. You can not guarantee what the weather will be like but because you are less likely to seduce you from sunflower fields tend to concentrate on the actual condition of the property.
Anyway, back to our topic.
Cheap real estate is still, if you know where to look, and if you are willing to be flexible.
I'm definitely not advocating that you buy an old barn to convert, or a tumble-down hut - unless you are an experienced builder. The property itself may be cheap, but the renovation of an old house in France, it is not. There is a good reason why so many French people buy new homes and old to us expats - it's because a new French houses are much cheaper.
I am not saying you should not buy an old French house - they can be a joy - I'm just saying be very careful to be renovated. It can easily cost as much again as the purchase, or even in some cases. I know I've done it.
I'm on the field a little less known. There are several things that put up real estate prices across the board - not only in France - it is clear that avoiding them will in a region more affordable.
The proximity to the sea is a big one. Move further inland and the prices start to fall very quickly. The proximity of the mountains, especially ski resorts, is also a hot spot and you will pay. Similarly, in the vicinity of airports, especially with the number of cheap flights available now.
Of course your definition of cheap property in France could not be like me and will certainly vary from person to person. If you are from London or New York, most places in France will probably seem quite affordable (except Paris). In fact, if you are from the United Kingdom almost everywhere has properties that are less expensive than at home! On the other hand, if you are less densely populated areas of the United States you will find French property prices are pretty much what you're used to.
By the time you read this, the exchange rate could be much higher - I hope so, because it will surely have more scope. But France is a great country, and if you are willing to research and perhaps a bit more flexible in the choice of area you will find cheap property in France is still readily available. I bet that is exactly right for you!
Apparently Jeff is an Englishman living in France. He is the author of the French Property Buyer's Guide, a book simply MUST have if you are looking for cheap property in France.
