Oh the joys of the old property. Wandern old French farms with more land than you know what to do with outbuildings galore. Picturesque old mills by a creek. Cozy cabins with meandering climb the walls and Tumbling on the eaves. If you are looking for a French holiday weekend or perhaps a permanent home, what could be better? <

Why did I use the word "prevention" and "catastrophe" in the title? What happened to the old French property?

Now there is often nothing wrong with it. There are a number of ancient sites in France just waiting for you to snap it. France is full of beautiful old buildings. Unfortunately, I have also the other side of the French property market, and I have too many people, the decisions that simply do not stack up - on the property that almost did not get up!

Now the last thing I have is negative. I love France, I love the French way of life, and I own an old French property. I do not want to be any from. You can certainly the right place for you, and it will probably be surprisingly inexpensive.

As long as you know a little about what you do and do not go into it blindly.

Take our own situation. When we have our old French farmhouse about 30%, it was only through the summer habitable. Not in the winter because they have no heating and gaps in the doors and windows, you could by sandwiches! The rest, about 50% of IT was accommodation for cattle and 20%, it should probably have been sentenced.

But we knew exactly what we buy. We had done a lot for research. We had a pretty good idea of what renovations would cost. In fact, we would be nearly two years searching for a place that came before the right. It was our fifth trip to France for the express purpose of searching for a home, and we knew the place quite well, as we come here for vacation for about 15 years.

The problem is I come on people all the time bought their dream home in France, but admit it is "not exactly what they were looking for". " More than that, they have begun to make things wrong with it. Sometimes little things that sometimes the really important things.

And they admit that a part of the reason they bought because they did not want to go back home without having to find somewhere. I wish I could say these are isolated cases.

I know of one couple, the banks on the management of a Bed and Breakfast in support of their pension. Unfortunately, their roof is not solid, and it goes back to cost 20,000 euros to the right. You can not afford to work even afford to sell and return to the United Kingdom.

It is very sad. Even more so because it is not so.

It is no secret to buy an old French property. If you do not know the market research. If you do not know the real estate purchase process that is about it. Questions until you are sure you understand. A complete pain in the neck, if necessary. In France, are well paid - they work for their money!

Look online for a book on the topic and also visit. You do not have to buy on your first trip. OK, it may not be cheap to visit France on a regular basis to homes, but I reckon two or three trips will be much less expensive than a new roof!

Do not too quickly. Adopting exactly the same attitude as you would when buying a house at home. In this way you can at the end with the same result as we have done an absolutely beautiful old property that is the envy of every visitor!

Apparently Jeff is an Englishman living in France. After much coaxing, he finally has written The French Property Buyer's Guide, which is crucial for everyone thinking of buying the old real estate
