As you may already have discovered, you must obtain a license in France to practice many trades and professions. This is not to more bureaucracy, but to protect ourselves, the consumers. My favorites that I discovered when attending a training for a gun permit, are mole-catcher, which is also entitled to wear a very smart uniform. If you are interested in your property you can find a report from the licensed asbestos, lead and termite inspector or expert "even before you meet the licensed plumber or gas fitter. Your report comes with an extensive number of pages which not only describe what they have found, but also advise you about the consequences. My clients often ask me to explain these reports to them, and although I am not a licensed inspector, I try to simplify some of the jargon for them. Nothing can be as good as a translation of the entire report, by an authorized translator of course, but here are a few basics.

Depending on the department and its rules you may have with a supplier report on behalf of or "know-how" on the property in the presence of termites, you will get an asbestos almost always, and if the property is old, you will probably get a to lead, especially in color.

Asbestos fiber-cement products such as Drainage pipes, exhaust pipes and corrugated foil is certainly in situ, provided that it does not deteriorate. The report will be clear whether or not it is safe or degrading. Depending on the exposure to the elements, fiber-cement products have a very long life safe, you should expect at least 30 years and often lasts much longer. Signs of deterioration are fairly obvious - such as crumbling and dust.

Fiber-cement roofing sheets, water-and weather-proof in their own right and is often used for agricultural and industrial buildings. There is also a product that is primarily to support the roof over channel homes. The contour is a perfect fit for the tiles, so they tend to slip less, and if they do, for example, in high winds, water does not penetrate into the roof space.

Even if the fiber-cement is in good condition, there are two important points that you should be aware of and to the attention of persons who are on your property. The dust created when sanding or sawing it should not be long, it's been swallowed or inhaled. Safe work practice is to wear a mask (and I am not one of those cheap disposable paper) and on the wet fiber cement, where it is to be used to stimulate the creation of dust. Secondly, waste fiber cement should not lead to a general landfill site, but a license to handle. The City Council will advise you as to the location of the nearest one, and sometimes even leads out there.

Termites are not available in all departments and, therefore, a survey for them is not compulsory in France. If the inspector in a property, he shall be obliged to send it to the Mairie. They should be killed, the wood is removed and new wood should be protected from further attacks. Termites do not generally like the cold and drafts, so they dig in and the ends of wood from the floor or wall. They have seen wooden posts, leaving the ground on metal posts and plates, now you know why. Logs are stacked on the floor as magnet for termites, so the wood outside doors should be raised to the ground with air at, for example, by stacking them on an old pallet.

Lead was in most glossy color type to 1948 and was in some paints until about the 1977th It is still possible, lead paints for use in specific situations. Children and animals, it is known that the result of gnawing wood painted like cribs and stables. The danger today is similar to asbestos, if they are burned or cut the fumes are toxic and dust. A mask should be worn, and you are obliged to warn all the work in the property that there is lead in the paint, so that the appropriate precautions. The report should give you the depth of the lead in paint under the surface, and an indication whether or not there is a risk. When the color of lead far below layers of paint that does not mean it is a much lower risk, of course, until you sand or burn it out.

So Termites are not a cause for celebration, but do not panic over fiber cement, asbestos, or lead hidden deep in color, only that in a respectful manner.
