Boris is back ... and this time as mayor of London. What does his election mean for builders and craftsmen in the capital?

The mayor has a series of tasks necessary for building owners and developers. It makes London-wide policy for planning and gives the green light (or denied) of major construction projects. He manages Trafalgar Square and Westminster Square Garden and powers in relation to housing in the metropolis.

Since October 2007, he has more powers in the areas of housing and planning. In order to influence housing now he uses the priorities to meet the housing needs of London and he decides how public money for new affordable housing will be spent. In planning, he now has a greater say whether the draft local plans of the municipalities are in line with the Mayor of the Spatial Development Strategy for London ( "The London Plan"). He has great discretion to determine planning applications of strategic importance.

Mayor Johnson has published his London Plan in the coming months, when its objectives will be clarified, but here is a foretaste of what is likely to continue after what he said during the last few months campaigning.

Boris Johnson has said he wants to 50,000 new affordable homes in the next three years. And he stressed that this "as" desirable "and not just" decent. "He wants to be composed of single-family homes with gardens and not just blocks of one and two bedroom apartments. He would like to see variety and good design and not as worldly streets of homes. This should be some construction workers employed.

He also wants the 84,000 empty homes in London to be renovated and restored to service - so much work for electricians, plumbers, decorators, plasterers and other trades.

Mayor Johnson has a policy of "design crime". By this he means that streets and open spaces are well lit so that people feel less vulnerable, and there are no dark corners for criminals to lurk in.

At large public projects Boris is open. He criticized the government's proposals for the expansion of Heathrow and favors the development of a new airport for the capital in the Thames estuary, which he believes would be far less disruptive to residents and therefore safer. He cites Hong Kong and major cities as Washington, the relocation of its main airport in recent times. Of course, the development of such a project would not only work for the massive construction on the airport itself, but also in connection with the creation of an infrastructure to the airport and efficiently used.

He is also trying to get our views of historic buildings. He UNESCO's announcement that it considers the Tower of London and the Palace of Westminster are potential candidates for the list of endangered World Heritage sites. That, says Boris is an embarrassment, we can assume that the proposals for high rise buildings in the vicinity of buildings equivalent-friendly buildings are not looked at.

He believes that green is beautiful. He wants his powers to protect London's green belt and is against the new buildings in the gardens.

Mayor Johnson is of course the flagship and the responsibility for the management and delivery of two major projects: the 16 billion pound Crossrail project - the East-West rail link between London, which started in 2010, and the 9.3 billion - pound project, the Olympic village to enjoy the world concentrating from August 2008, when the Beijing Olympic Games will be over.
